Revaz Gabriadze, Georgian theatre and film director, playwright, painter, and sculptor

Revaz Gabriadze, known as Rezo Gabriadzé is a film director, playwright, writer, painter and sculptor and creator of a puppet theater that performs in the countries of the former USSR, in Europe and in the United States. He was born June 29, 1936 in Kutaisi (Soviet Union) and died June 6, 2021 in Tbilisi. From the 1960s, his 35 films were successful in the Soviet space, including the most famous Mimino. In 1981, Rezo Gabriadzé founded a puppet theater in Tbilisi, where he worked as a playwright and costume designer.
In the 1990s, he worked in Switzerland and France, where he respectively created two dramatic shows: Quelle tristesse – the end of the aisle in Lausanne and Koutaïssi in Paris. In 1994, he created Chants de la Volga, which became, in Georgia, La Bataille de Stalingrad (Stalingrad – now Volgograd – being on the Volga), and which was presented in Dijon in 1996 and at the Festival d’Avignon in 1997 In 2004, he wrote and directed the play The Forbidden Christmas, or The Doctor and the Sick for the Varyshnikov ballet in New York. The premiere takes place in Minneapolis (it is then performed at Lincoln Center and at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston). In 2017, his puppet show was produced at the Festival d’Avignon from July 11 to July 17 and was then in Paris, Nice, Mulhouse and Lyon. In 2018, it is scheduled in Dunkirk on March 13 and March 14, in Villeneuve-d’Ascq on March 20 and March 21 and in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges on March 27.
Gabriadzé’s theater has premiered in many countries: France (at the Avignon festival), Great Britain, United States (at the San Diego festival in 1988, at Kennedy Center in Washington, at Lincoln Center in 2002 , at the Spoletto festival in Charlestown), Scotland (at the Edinburgh festival), Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain, Norway, Russia (in Moscow and Saint Petersburg), Serbia (at the BITEF festival in Belgrade), Korea- South (at the Seoul Festival).
