Gona – little Switzerland in Racha, Georgia

Gona is a small village in Oni Municipality, in the region of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti. The village is surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains covered in snow. It is 39 km away from Oni, the central city of the region. Gona is located at 1680 meters above sea level. According to the statistics from the 2002 census, there are only 2 dwellers left in the village. Gona has turned into a summer pasture and dwelling for the locals. The river Chveshuri runs the full length of the village.
A number of old wooden houses are scattered throughout the area. Gona preserves a medieval hall church. The church reflects the unique architecture of medieval Georgia.
