Data Tavadze premieres Schiller play ‘Intrigue and Love’ at Dresden theatre
Acclaimed young theatre director Data Tavadze has premiered his newest work on a German stage, as the brightest talent of Georgian stage art oversaw a production of Intrigue and Love at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden over the weekend.
Tavadze, winner of the Fast Forward European Festival for Young Stage Directors, led the premiere for the Friedrich Schiller play at the venue on Saturday.
In his work a cast including Hans-Werner Leupelt, Moritz Kienemann and Luise Aschenbrenner were on stage for the first show of a premiere bill that will be hosting stage art fans for five more evenings through April
The director said the premiere performance was “one of the happiest days of my life” and called the production “a wonderful collaboration”. Involving stage design by Thilo Reuther and costumes by Irène Favre de Lucascaz, the Intrigue and Love staging also featured music by Georgian theatre and film composer Nika Pasuri.
A Shakespearesque drama by Schiller, the play involves aristocratic intrigues and the famed German poet’s critique of bourgeois dealings.
Tavadze has established himself on the German stage with his 2016 award and through productions at venues including the Deutsches Theater Berlin and the Maxim Gorki Theater in the capital.
Born in 1989, Tavadze joined Tbilisi’s Royal District Theatre in 2008, with his productions recognised as representing the new generation of stage art directors in the country. The next show of Intrigue and Love at the Dresden theatre will run on Tuesday.
