The Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria has organized a solo exhibition of the works of Niko Pirosmani. The exhibition of the Georgian painter will be on view until the 27th of January, 2019. It is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his death. The exhibition is supported by The Albert Museum, Georgian National Museum, and Infinitart Foundation Vienna. Life of Niko Pirosmani
The museum provides information about the painter’s conception of art. Niko Pirosmani led a nomadic life, wandering between city and country, stalls and inns. His creations reflect the vision of an artist as a clear-sighted outsider:
The paintings of Niko Pirosmani were not presented at museums but at inns, taverns, shops, etc. Throughout his life, Pirosmani was poor taking ordinary jobs including housepainting and whitewashing buildings. He also worked for shopkeepers in Tbilisi, creating signboards, paintings, and portraits, according to their commissions. He usually painted on oilcloth. There are many works about merchants, shopkeepers, workmen, and noblemen groups. Pirosmani was fond of nature and rural life. He rarely painted city landscapes. He made many animal paintings. He was the only Georgian animalist. Pirosmani also was attracted by historical figures and themes such as Shota Rustaveli, Queen Tamar, Giorgi Saakadze, as well as ordinary Georgian people and their everyday lives. On the 31of October, the world celebrated the Halloween Day. The Museum posted on Facebook the painting of Niko Pirosmani to congratulate people on the day. As his paintings are a little bit dark and scary, they thought it would be a perfect choice for people to visit the exhibition before joining the Halloween parties. The Albertina Museum houses one of the largest and most significant drawings, old master prints as well as modern graphic works, photographs and architectural drawings. The museum also houses temporary exhibitions.
